Trump’s ban on immigration faces worldwide opposition and does enhance the vision of the United States as a compassionate nation. That’s why the mayor of London opposes a state visit to Great Britain.
Sadiq Khan, London’s mayor, does not believe that Britain should roll out the red carpet for Trump. And the reason for his belief is the travel ban on Muslims.
Khan stated that Trump’s “ban on people from seven Muslim-majorities countries” . And his blocking refugees from entering the United States should be reason enough for Trump not receiving all the pomp of a state visit.
The mayor’s statement came one day before British legislators were to debate a proposal to downgrade Trump’s state visit. The visit is controversial and opposed by many British citizens.
In fact, a petition to Parliament to ban Trump from entering Great Britain drew hundreds of thousands of signatures. It appears as if the English people dislike him as much as we do.
Trump’s popularity within Britain’s Parliament also is not good. The Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow, even stated that the visit should not be a state visit and went even further.
Bercow refused to allow Trump to speak to Parliament. He stated that “An address by a foreign leader to both Houses of Parliament is not an automatic right. It is an earned honor.”
He continued by saying, “Although customarily, an invitation to a visiting leader to deliver an address there would be issued in the names of the two speakers.I would not wish to issue an invitation to President Trump to speak in the Royal Gallery.”
And his reasons were the same as Khan’s. “Our opposition to racism and to sexism, and our support for equality before the law and an independent judiciary are hugely important considerations in the House of Commons,” Bercow said.
Britain is not the only European group to express dissatisfaction with Trump’s policies. The European Union also got into the Trump-bashing mood.
Federica Mogherini, the High Representative of the European Union, blasted Trump for his immigration ban and stated that the EU would continue to aid refugees.
“This is not the European Way,” Mogherini said of the immigration bad. “The EU will continue to take care and host Syrian refugees and others who are fleeing from war.”.
She also warned Trump about building walls by saying. “In Europe, we have a history that has told that every time one invests in divisions and walls you might end up being in a prison if you build all walls around you. We have a history and a tradition that we celebrate when walls are brought down and bridges are built.”
The citizens and leaders of Great Britain and the European Union have no use for Trump as long as his immigration ban is in effect. And we can be reasonably confident that they will continue their defiance as long as Trump has ties to Russia.
They remember the years of intolerance and the loss of freedoms by Eastern Europeans after World War II.
Trump’s unpopularity is worldwide, and our leaders should learn from the leaders of Great Britain and the European Union. We must oppose hatred and intolerance and should deny Trump opportunities to spread them at universities, cities, and other meetings or groups.
